Who this is for

If your people load, unload, pack, label, store incidental to transport, or prepare shipping papers for materials that appear in the Hazardous Materials Table, they are hazmat employees under 49 CFR 171.8 — even if nobody at your site would describe the job that way.

  • Warehouses and distribution centers — receiving, put-away, picking and staging of hazmat SKUs; lithium batteries, aerosols, paints, cleaning chemicals.
  • 3PL and fulfillment operations — packing to UN performance specifications on behalf of clients, and preparing the papers that go with the freight.
  • Shipping departments — anyone who signs a shipper’s certification, applies markings and labels, or decides how a package goes out.
  • Medical courier companies — specimens, dry ice, pharmaceuticals. The courier-specific guide.
  • Small employers with no training department — where compliance is one more thing on the operations manager’s list.

What stays your responsibility

Written plainly, because it is the part that decides whether your file survives a question from an inspector.

You certify the training, not us.

49 CFR 172.702(b) puts the duty on the hazmat employer to train, test and certify. Our 172.704(d) record carries the five required items for the training we delivered and leaves a block for your own certification — the regulation does not prescribe a signature format, but signing documents your determination that this training fits the functions the employee actually performs.

Function-specific training must match real duties.

This course delivers a baseline for warehouse handling, shipping-paper preparation and ground loading. Cargo tank and portable tank filling, radioactive materials, explosives, bulk packagings and air shipments need more. General awareness vs function-specific.

Site-specific protection is yours alone.

172.704(a)(3)(ii) requires training on the measures and procedures in place at your facility. No online course can deliver that. Full scope and limitations.

You keep the records.

For as long as the person is your hazmat employee, plus 90 days, covering the preceding three years. Recordkeeping rules · free 172.704(d) template.

Common questions

Can I buy training for multiple employees?
Yes. Packs of 5 and 10 seats. You add each employee with their name and their language from the team panel, and each one gets their own access link. Seats you have not assigned stay available, so you can buy for a crew of eight out of a pack of ten and use the last two when you hire.
Can employees take the course in Spanish?
Yes, and a mixed crew is the normal case. Language is chosen per seat, not per company, and each document states the language of instruction that employee received. More on the Spanish course.
How soon can employees start?
Immediately. The team panel opens right after payment, and every training link is created the moment you add the employee. There is nothing to schedule and nothing to wait for.
Can I manage all certificates in one place?
Yes. The certificate and the 49 CFR 172.704(d) training record are generated as PDFs the moment each employee passes, and both are available from the panel — individually or all at once.
Do I need to talk to sales?
No. There is no sales call, no demo and no contract. You pick a pack, pay with a card through Stripe, and the team panel opens right after payment.
Can I buy more than 10 seats?
Write to hello@hazteamready.com and say how many people and by when. Above ten seats it is usually cheaper to combine packs than to buy singles.
What if an employee fails the assessment?
They can review the material and take it again at no extra cost. The seat is not consumed by a failed attempt — the certificate is issued when they pass, with the score printed on it.
Is online hazmat training allowed?
Yes. 49 CFR 172.704 sets out what a hazmat employee must be trained on and requires that the employee be tested; it does not prescribe a delivery method, and PHMSA has long accepted computer-based training provided the applicable content is genuinely covered and the employee is tested on it. The employer still has to certify the training and keep the record. More on online delivery.
What training may still be employer-specific?
No provider can honestly promise compliance, and you should distrust one that does. Under 49 CFR 172.702(b) the hazmat employer is responsible for training, testing and certifying its own hazmat employees. This course delivers general awareness, safety and security awareness in full plus a function-specific baseline; you remain responsible for function-specific training that matches each employee's actual duties, for the site-specific protective measures under 172.704(a)(3)(ii), and for keeping the records. What stays on your side.
How often is recurrent training required?
At least once every three years under 172.704(c)(2), and sooner if the employee changes to a function they were not trained for, or if the rules governing their function change. New hazmat employees have a 90-day window in which they may perform functions under direct supervision of a trained employee. Training frequency in detail.
Does DOT approve training providers?
No, and be careful with anyone who says otherwise. DOT and PHMSA do not certify, approve or accredit hazmat training providers, and there is no federal hazmat licence for a general hazmat employee. What exists is a certificate of completion plus the employer's own certification under 172.704(d). What the certificate is and is not.
How long do we have to keep the records?
As long as that employee works for you as a hazmat employee, plus 90 days after they stop — and the record on file must cover the preceding three years. The recordkeeping rule in detail.
