What does DOT hazmat training cost?

A single seat is $49. Five seats are $220, which is $44 per employee. Ten seats are $390, which is $39 per employee. Those are the only three one-time prices, there is no sales call between you and them, and there are no setup, certificate, record or retake fees on top.

OptionPriceEffective cost per employee
Individual — one seat$49$49 per employee
5 seats — one-time pack$220$44 per employee
10 seats — one-time pack$390$39 per employee

One seat trains one employee and produces that employee's certificate and 49 CFR 172.704(d) training record. A pack is the same thing bought in bulk: the seats are yours to assign, one per person, whenever you like.

Which option costs least for 1 to 10 employees

Because seats can be bought one at a time, a pack is not always the lower-cost route. The table below is arithmetic, not a recommendation — it is simply the lowest total you can pay at each headcount using the three published prices.

EmployeesLowest totalPer employeeWhat that combination is
1$49$49.001 individual seat
2$98$49.002 individual seats
3$147$49.003 individual seats
4$196$49.004 individual seats — below the price of the 5-seat pack
5$220$44.005-seat pack
6$269$44.835-seat pack + 1 individual seat
7$318$45.435-seat pack + 2 individual seats
8$367$45.885-seat pack + 3 individual seats
9$390$43.3310-seat pack — it overtakes 5 + 4 singles ($416) here
10$390$39.0010-seat pack

Two thresholds are worth knowing before you buy. At four employees or fewer, four individual seats cost $196 and the five-seat pack costs $220, so the pack costs more. At nine employees, the ten-seat pack at $390 costs less than a five-seat pack plus four individual seats at $416 — so the ten-seat pack becomes the lower total one seat before you actually have ten people.

Above ten employees, add individual seats or a second pack. Team training has the full detail on assigning seats and tracking completion.

What is included in every seat

  • The full 49 CFR 172.704 core course — general awareness, safety and security awareness, plus a function-specific baseline for warehouse handling and ground shipping.
  • English or Spanish, chosen per seat. The language of instruction is printed on both documents.
  • Self-paced online access, seven modules, start and stop as the employee's shift allows.
  • The assessment, with an 80% passing score and retakes at no extra cost.
  • A certificate of completion carrying a code anyone can check at verificar.php.
  • A 172.704(d) training record containing the five elements the regulation requires.

Is there a monthly plan?

Yes. The Compliance plan is $99 per month and can be cancelled at any time. It is a different shape of purchase from a pack, so here is what it does and does not do, with the arithmetic rather than a recommendation.

What it includes: two employee trainings per calendar month, for up to ten active employees; records kept for you and available when someone asks; and new-hire deadline and three-year renewal alerts. Unused monthly trainings do not roll over.

The arithmetic. At full use the plan covers 24 trainings over twelve months for $1,188, which works out at $49.50 per training. A ten-seat pack covers ten trainings for $390, or $39 each. On price per employee trained, the packs are lower; what the monthly plan buys instead is the alerting and the record-keeping, so that nobody on your side has to remember a renewal date. Which of those matters more depends on whether you train a crew once or hire continuously — it is not a question this page can answer for you.

Individual or team — who should choose which

Choose an individual seat if you are an employee buying your own training, a contractor who needs a record in your own name, or an employer with four or fewer people to train.

Choose a pack if you are an employer training five or more people, if you want to assign seats as you hire rather than all at once, or if you want one place to see who has finished.

Either way the regulatory position is the same: under 172.704 the employer certifies that its hazmat employees were trained and tested, and the employer keeps the record. Buying a seat does not move that duty. If you are still deciding between providers, our buyer's checklist for hazmat training sets out what to verify before you pay anyone, including us.

Training a Spanish-speaking crew? The Spanish course is the same course at the same prices, with the language of instruction recorded on the certificate and the training record.

Pricing questions

Are your prices public?
Yes. The three one-time prices and the monthly plan price are published on this page and on the product pages, and you can buy without speaking to anyone. Nothing is quoted on request.
Is a sales call required?
No. There is no demo, no discovery call and no contract. You buy a seat or a pack and the course opens as soon as payment clears.
Are there hidden fees?
No. The price covers the course, the assessment, retakes if the employee does not pass the first time, the certificate and the 49 CFR 172.704(d) training record. There is no setup fee, no per-certificate fee and no charge to retake the assessment.
What happens to seats I do not use?
They stay in your team panel. A pack is a one-time purchase rather than a subscription, so unassigned seats do not expire and can be given to employees you have not hired yet — which also lets you cover a new hire inside the 90-day window that 49 CFR 172.704(c)(1) allows, without a second purchase.
How much does it cost to train 5 employees?
$220, which is $44 per employee. That is the five-seat pack, and it includes the assessment, certificates and 172.704(d) training records for all five.
How much does it cost to train 10 employees?
$390, which is $39 per employee. That is the ten-seat pack. At nine employees it already costs less than a five-seat pack plus four individual seats, which would be $416.
Is the monthly Compliance plan cheaper than buying a pack?
Not per employee trained. At full use the $99 per month plan covers 24 trainings in twelve months for $1,188, which is $49.50 per training, against $39 per employee for a ten-seat pack. The plan is priced for continuous hiring: what it adds is renewal and new-hire alerts and records kept for you, not a lower price per head.
Do you offer a discount for more than ten employees?
There is no published volume price beyond the ten-seat pack. Above ten employees you can add individual seats or buy a second pack at the same published prices. If you need a purchase order or are training a much larger group, write to hello@hazteamready.com and we will tell you what we can do rather than quote something on this page we cannot stand behind.
