What the course covers

The course is built around the training categories 49 CFR 172.704(a) requires of a hazmat employee — the person who loads, unloads, handles, packs, marks or prepares hazardous materials for transport, prepares shipping papers, or drives a vehicle carrying them (the full test). These are the seven modules, in order.

Why you are here. Who counts as a hazmat employee, the three-year recurrent requirement, and the 90-day window for new hires.
The regulatory system. DOT and PHMSA, 49 CFR Parts 171–180, the Hazardous Materials Table at 172.101, the nine hazard classes and packing groups.
Recognition. Markings, labels, placards, shipping papers under the 172.200s, and the shipper’s certification.
Handling. UN performance packaging, segregation under 177.848, loading, securing, and temporary storage incidental to transportation.
Safety training — 172.704(a)(3)(i). Exposure routes, safety data sheets and the Emergency Response Guidebook, protective actions, emergency response information, initial notification and evacuation, incident reporting.
Security awareness — 172.704(a)(4). Threat recognition, what to report and to whom, and the scope of a security plan.
Function-specific baseline — 172.704(a)(2). Common baseline content for three roles: warehouse and handler, shipping and office, driver and loader. Duties beyond that baseline are your employer’s to supplement.

Together these deliver 172.704(a)(1) general awareness/familiarization, (a)(3) safety and (a)(4) security awareness in full, plus a baseline of (a)(2) function-specific content for warehouse handling, shipping-paper preparation and ground loading roles. What this course does not cover

Published here on purpose. A training file that overstates its own scope is worth less to you than one that states its limits, because the limits are what tell your employer what else they still owe you.

Not included.

Emergency responder training and HAZWOPER (29 CFR 1910.120) — a different rule, a different agency. Driver training under 49 CFR 177.816 and any CDL hazardous materials endorsement. Air (IATA/ICAO) and vessel (IMDG) modal training. In-depth security plan training under 172.704(a)(5) where a security plan applies.

Not satisfied by this course alone.

49 CFR 172.704(a)(3)(ii) requires training on the measures and procedures in place at your own facility to protect employees from the hazards they may be exposed to. No online course can deliver that: only your employer knows your site. The training record leaves that explicitly to the employer.

Specialized functions need more.

Common questions

How soon can I start?

How long does it take?

The course is self-paced and completion time varies by learner: you can stop and come back, and your progress is saved. The certificate and the training record carry an estimated course duration — an estimate of the length of the material, not a measurement of the time you personally spent. That wording is deliberate, because 49 CFR does not set a minimum number of hours.

What happens if I fail the assessment?

The passing score is 80%. If you do not reach it, you can review the material and take the assessment again at no extra cost. The certificate is only issued once you pass, and it prints the score you achieved.

Can I take it in Spanish?

Yes. You choose English or Spanish at the start, and the course, the assessment and the documents are produced in the language you chose. The certificate and the training record state the language of instruction, which is what an employer or an inspector would want to see. More about the Spanish course.

Is the certificate a DOT licence?

No. DOT and PHMSA do not licence, certify or accredit hazmat training or training providers for general hazmat employees. What you receive is a certificate of completion from an independent provider, plus a 172.704(d) training record for your employer’s file. The difference, explained properly.

I am buying this for myself, but my employer needs the paperwork. Does that work?

Yes, and that is the usual case. The 172.704(d) record PDF is written to be handed to an employer: it carries the five items the paragraph requires for the training we delivered, and leaves a block for the employer’s own certification.
